10 tips for Plant Appreciation Day

Plant Appreciation Day is the perfect moment to give your houseplants some extra love. Here are 10 care tips:

  1. Give your plants a hydration boost. Many (sub)tropical plants, such as Calathea, Alocasia, Monstera, Maranta, Ferns and Banana plant, thrive in high humidity. They love being misted with a spray bottle. Check which exotic plant could use a little misting!
  2. Feed your plants. It’s spring, the growing season, which means most houseplants need nutrients for healthy growth. Add suitable plant feed when watering your houseplants.
  3. Dust the leaves. Dust on leaves blocks light and slows growth. Houseplants with large leaves, such as Ficus Lyrata and Strelitzia, especially benefit from clean foliage.
  4. Remove dead and damaged leaves. Take away any yellow, brown or damaged leaves. This helps your houseplant focus its energy on healthy growth and instantly makes it look fresher.
  5. Repot your plants. Give your plants room to grow by repotting them. Most plants need a pot that’s about 20% larger every 2–3 years. More space below the soil means more growth above it.
  6. Refresh the potting soil. While you’re repotting, give your plants fresh soil too. Even plants that don’t need a bigger pot will benefit from new soil. You’ll notice fresher leaves and better growth.
  7. Rotate your plants. Plants grow towards the light. By turning them a quarter turn regularly, you ensure even growth and prevent them from growing lopsided. That way, your plants become all-round beauties.
  8. Prune and shape. Does your plant have wild shoots. Is it growing out of shape, or do you want to control its size. This is the ideal moment to lightly prune and encourage fuller growth.
  9. Propagate your favourite plant(s). You can never have too many of your favourite houseplants, right. Spring is the perfect season for propagation. Check out a step-by-step guide and go for propagation success.
  10. Share your plant joy. Plant Appreciation Day is the perfect moment to gift a plant, or a cutting, to someone who could use a little plant happiness.
