Caring for Tulips in a vase: here’s how

Would you like to enjoy your Tulips for as long as possible? Take a look at the 10 best tips below for keeping Tulips fresh in a vase:

  1. Tip beforehand: don’t remove the florist’s paper or wrap just yet! Place the Tulips in your vase first, with the stems cut straight, see tip 2, and leave them in the paper or wrap for about an hour. The Tulips will absorb the water and gradually straighten themselves.
  2. Cut the Tulips straight across: trim the stems straight across with a sharp, clean knife. Cutting Tulips straight, rather than at an angle, prevents them from taking up too much water. For the best results, re-cut the stems straight every few days.
  3. Prick a small hole in the stem with a needle or pin: make the hole carefully just below the flower head. This slows down the growth of Tulips, helping to prevent them from drooping too quickly.
  4. Choose the right vase: Tulips drink plenty of water and continue to grow several centimetres in the vase. Choose a tall, narrow and clean vase that supports the stems, so your Tulips remain upright for longer. There are also special Tulip vases with multiple spouts, giving each stem its own space and preventing them from bending over one another.
  5. Place a copper coin in the vase: for example, a 5 cent coin. This helps your Tulips stay upright and fresh for longer.
  6. Use cold water for Tulips: always use cold water. Lukewarm or warm water speeds up the blooming process, causing Tulips to fade more quickly.
  7. Don’t overfill with water and top up regularly: fill the vase with just a small layer of water. Around 5 centimetres is enough. Top up the water every other day, as Tulips are thirsty flowers.
  8. Add flower food: add cut flower food to the water to extend the life of your Tulips.
  9. Avoid heat: keep your Tulips out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, such as radiators.
  10. Don’t place Tulips next to fruit: ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which accelerates the ripening process of both fruit and flowers.
Place a copper coin, for example a 5 cent coin, in your vase. This helps your Tulips stay straighter and fresh for longer.

My Tulips are drooping. What should I do?

Try to identify the cause of your drooping Tulips and take the appropriate action:

  • Too much water: if you’ve given your Tulips too much water, reduce it to a small layer of around 5 centimetres.
  • Too little water: make sure you regularly top up the 5 centimetre layer, for example every other day.
  • Water too warm: use cold water wherever possible. Warm water makes Tulips grow too quickly, causing them to droop sooner.
  • Stems not re-cut: each time you refresh the vase water, trim the stems straight across again with a sharp, clean knife. This ensures they continue to absorb water properly, without suddenly taking in too much.
  • Too warm indoors: Tulips do not cope well with heat. Check that they are not placed too close to a heat source or in direct sunlight.
  • Not enough support: is your vase tall and narrow enough? A vase that is too low or too wide provides insufficient support for your Tulips.
  • Your vase isn’t clean: for the straightest Tulips, always use a thoroughly clean vase. You can read more about the importance of a clean vase here.
