Did you know?
Research into gift-giving behaviour consistently shows that people get more enjoyment from experiences than from possessions, simply because an experience becomes a story, while an object eventually remains just an object.
Make a Kintsugi vase together
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold, turning the cracks into something beautiful and eye-catching rather than hiding them away. It’s a lovely metaphor for life and everything you go through together as parent and child. After all, emotional cracks aren’t something to cover up. They help make you who you are. Give your dad or mum a Kintsugi DIY kit to try for themselves, or make a Kintsugi vase together and add a beautiful flower to display in it.
Plan a green day out
Visit a pick-your-own flower garden, greenhouse, garden centre or another green destination nearby. Getting away from the daily routine and spending time surrounded by greenery with their child(ren) means more to many mums and dads than receiving yet another thing. And enjoying greenery together is good for your mind, body and your relationship.
Do some gardening together
Give them the promise of spending some time together in the garden or vegetable patch. You could add a few essentials, such as seeds, a watering can or some lovely plants, so you can get started straight away. Especially handy if your mum or dad has already mentioned that “someone really needs to sort out that flower bed”. Tip: pick a date straight away and make sure you have some tasty snacks and drinks to enjoy during your well-earned breaks.
Create a floral signature together
Let your mum or dad choose a floral signature and work on it together. You won’t just end up with a beautiful floral arrangement. You’ll also discover more about each other’s personal taste in flowers, and perhaps find out which one of you is the family’s true floral artist. A floral signature is a distinctive style developed by a floral stylist, but of course, you and your parent can simply create one of your own.
Give them a flower-arranging tool
With a handy tool such as a flower frog or a twister, your mum or dad can arrange a bouquet in a slightly different way. Add a beautiful bouquet to the gift, so they have something to practise with straight away rather than a tool that ends up sitting lonely in a drawer.
Treat your mum or dad to a flower subscription
A fresh bouquet delivered to your door every two weeks? We bet you’ll make your parent very happy with a flower subscription. It’s convenient and always a lovely surprise to see what turns up on the table next. The options are endless: there are also subscriptions for plants, cuttings, hand-tied bouquets and artificial flowers.
Also lovely for Father’s Day or Mother’s Day
These gift ideas work all year round, of course, but they’re also perfect forFather’s Day or Mother’s Day. These are exactly the moments when lots of people are looking for something that will genuinely surprise their mum or dad. A gift built around a shared experience feels much more personal than yet another gift voucher.
