Caring for orchids
- Cut 3 to 5cm off the stem diagonally.
- Place the orchids in tap water in a clean vase or clean floral tube.
- Repeat this every five days.
- Add cut flower food to the water for a longer vase life.
- Don’t touch the delicate interior of the flower in order to prevent it from wilting rapidly.
- Keep the flower away from direct sunlight, central heating and the fruit bowl.
- Regularly top the vase up with water.
Colours and shapes
The orchid fits with every style, so this beauty deserves the title of the Perfect Flower. There are more than 25,000 species, but you will particularly find the tropical lovelies at your florist. The flower comes in gorgeous colours, from powder pastels to candy pink or Zen white. There are even tiger prints, cow spots and stripes. Opt for the butterfly-like Phalaenopsis, the vamp Vanda, the slender Cymbidium or the Venus slipper (Paphiopedilum - pronounced ‘pa-fee-oh-ped-il-um’). They’re are all just beautiful as their names suggest.
Symbolism

Origin
You never ask a lady her age. So no one can say precisely how old the stylish orchids in the world’s second-largest family of plants are. But what we do know is that many of the orchid’s fabulous colours and shapes originate from the tropical rainforest.
