If you're tired of plants on the floor, then look to Japan for a design-led solution. The Kokedama is a ball of moss and soil suspended in the air, with a beautiful ornamental plant growing out of it. You can easily make these floating plants yourself, transforming your house or garden into an aerial oasis of peace. Read on to find out how.

How to make a Kokedama: a step-by-step guide

  1. Place a piece of moss on a table with the green side up.
  2. Wet the floral foam and place it in the middle of the moss.
  3. Poke the metal wire through the floral foam and make a hole for the string, so you can hang the ball.
  4. Place some potting soil around the floral foam.
  5. Fold the moss up and over the floral foam, creating a ball.
  6. Wrap the nylon thread around the ball creating a net that holds it all together.
  7. Make holes in the ball with the metal wire and stick the stem of the plant cuttings in the holes.
  8. Spray your floating plants with water and hang them up to enjoy the summer!
